In rural Uganda, land is not just a piece of property; it’s a cornerstone of livelihoods, culture and identity. The process of acquiring freehold titles on land in these areas can be fraught with challenges and complexities.

One of the primary challenges stems from the coexistence of customary and formal land tenure systems. Customary tenure, rooted in traditional practices and governed by local practices and norms often clashes with the formal system established by government.

The process of obtaining a freehold title involves numerous bureaucratic procedures including surveys, land inspections, documentation and registration with government authorities. They are often lengthy, protracted, have costs and can be open to corruption.

Friends Under One Sun have had two properties donated to them to use for their mission and purpose. We are in the process of obtaining freehold titles of these properties sold in the customary tenure when a respected landowner passed away and his family sold to various buyers so they could relocate to the big city.

Friends Under One Sun through its Ugandan Director and Project Manager Frank, have been in long discussions with the various other land holders, to all get freehold titles to our land through the government system. They have appointed an administrator among them and are in the process of advertising their intentions in the local newspaper and have applied to the land office and court system. I am pleased to say so far all is going well and this is a step forward in making good relationships and gaining the trust of the local communities.

Friends Under One Sun is determined to secure our legal land rights to our properties in Luwero and Kakiri by following the proper channels to obtain the freehold titles and then be able to pursue our mission and purpose to build our medical clinics.  We are patient and transparent and look forward to when we can announce and celebrate our success with all our loyal followers and donors.
